Mexico City, Mexico - A Units Overseas Chapter
Activities
The American Cemetery, located in Mexico City, is administered and maintained by the American Benevolent Society. The cemetery was developed in 1898 and covers approximately twenty acres.
Since the John Edwards Chapter was organized in 1953, several DAR members have been buried there. The chapter is currently working on locating those graves and supplying DAR insignia markers for those that have not been marked.
The American community has often held Memorial Day services at the cemetery. In 1976, to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial, the members of the chapter donated items for the altar of the Wright Chapel, which is located in the cemetery. John Edwards Chapter participates in a Veterans Memorial there.
On February 20, 2000, the John Edwards Chapter and the Mexico State Society marked the grave site of Bernardo de Gálvez during our 24th annual State Conference in Mexico City. Georganne Ferguson Love, President General, attended and participated in the unveiling.
NSDAR accepts patriotic service for Spanish troops under Gálvez after 24 December 1776.
